Brown Makes First Court Appearance

Dan Brown made his first appearance today in a London court which will hear a copyright infringment case. The defendant is the publisher of The Da Vinci Code, and the complaintants are Leigh and Baigent, two of the authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail. See our original post on this story.

The Washington Post was johnny-on-the-spot covering the story, even getting a picture of Brown as he entered the courthouse.

Update: Forbes has some great quotes from the opening-day proceedings, including some statements from Brown about his faith which were made on the courthouse steps.

This issue has been discussed by the world famous Italian writer Umberto Eco. According to him, plagiarism can only be proved if both books are assumed as fiction. The information about this can be found at:

Yeah, that's certainly true of plagiarism. But the claim is copyright infringement, not plagiarism, which is a different animal.

It will be interesting to see how the copyright infringement claim plays out, however, because they'd still need to claim substantial equivalance in texts that originate with Leigh Teabing -- uh, excuse me, Leigh and Baigent. And I just wonder: how much of their book do these guys figure originated with THEM? And how does that qualify as "history"?

BTW: Please don't overdo links to the Opus Dei site. We've published links to it, so I'm being courteous.
